Manufacturing System Design Decomposition (MSDD) 10.0 – Design Pattern for Smart Manufacturing Systems

The Center of Excellence for Systems Engineering at Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW) has developed a knowledge pattern to guide the design of smart manufacturing systems. The pattern has been created to help manufacturing companies, particularly Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), work through the myriad of decisions related to design and operations of manufacturing plants, lines, cells and work centers. PFW has extended Dr. David Cochran’s 20+ years of research into Axiomatic Design and Toyota Production System (TPS) principles applied to manufacturing design that created a Manufacturing Systems Design Decomposition (MSDD) pattern. The latest pattern, MSDD 10.0, integrates knowledge such as:

• Stakeholder needs & use cases
• Functional requirements (FRs) and associated Measures of Performance (MOPs) for manufacturing system design and operations.
• Decisions – fundamental design issues/questions that translate manufacturing system requirements into solutions. Decision patterns may include the typical criteria used to evaluate solutions and potential solution alternatives based on industry best practices, e.g. lean cellular “pull” production control concepts.
• Solution logical and physical architectures
• Traceability relationships between design decisions and the requirements that drive them or are derived from them.

The PFW team is extending the pattern to incorporate additional innovation and engineering techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and TRIZ.

To capture the rich relationships among this information, the PFW team leveraged Vitech’s GENESYS MBSE tool suite by extending the GENESYS Essentials schema to create new information classes, relationships, visualizations and reports. The PFW team believes the MSDD 10.0 decision-guiding pattern, maintained as a GENESYS project template, will jump-start the evaluation and adoption of smart manufacturing technologies, e.g. Industry 4.0, with resulting benefits in production cost, quality, manufacturing system flexibility and ROI.

Speaker Bio

John Fitch, an INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP), has over 40 years of engineering management, systems engineering and consulting experience across a diverse set of industries. John has been an innovator in systems engineering methods and tools for requirements management, decision management and technology roadmapping. He is currently supporting Purdue University Fort Wayne as a Senior Research Associate, sharing his experience with the faculty and students and local industry. In his “failed” retirement, John also teaches Systems Engineering for Project Performance International (PPI) and edits PPI’s monthly SyEN newsletter.
